Everything is about perspective (perhaps including science^^).
A few days back, I saw this news from Channel NewsAsia:
"On a lighter note, the Minister Mentor touched on what he calls assortative mating, that is, finding a spouse at your level — something he strongly believes in.
He said: "I have explained this. I think I lost votes after I explained the awful truth. Nobody believed it, but slowly it dawned on them, especially the graduates, that yes, you marry a non—graduate, then you worry about whether or not your son or daughter is going to make it to the university."
I am going to tell what I personally think is the best for my own children in the future. I suppose my opinion will not evoke any issue of suspicion of defamation related to the news above, since nobody is going to care what I said about myself. I believe it's important to help one's children to find their dreams when they are young. If they have a dream, they will find the way. When they are lost in their ways, for example addicted to drugs, it is possible to guide them back on track if they have their dreams unfulfilled, if they have strong faith in it; be it the dream to become a baker, a dancer, a novelist, a photographer, etc. If they are determined to become a doctor, they know they have to work hard, they HAVE TO get to the university. Besides, family values is also important and they should understand to be 脚踏实地,and don't linger too much on fast track to wealth (just take a look at the current financial crisis).
I am going to tell two stories. My mom's highest educational level is primary six; my dad worked in the States (switching between restaurants) when I was young and I could only see him once in two to three years. That's why I don't fear loneliness, it's in the blood (of my mom). Although luck played a part for me to get through, everyone has his/her fair share of luck at different point of his/her life. The second story is: I once got squeezed in the sardine-packed Bus 179. There was this guy (obviously a university student, who might become manager of a big corporate in the future) blocking the way to the back of the bus. After a long time, he moved a bit because he was accidentally pushed by someone. But then, he blocked the stair-way to the upper deck of the bus. There were so many people coming down from there and alighting the bus. Yet, he did not have the slightest idea to move away, and let people to go up, at least for me because it's really sardine-packing at the front. I believe it's not necessary for me to explain further.
Selective breeding is truly a sound scientific method in genetics. But the offspring are isolated from the same species in the wild. On a lighter note, I am not sure if the idea is sound in the sociology context. Another fact is that, many locals did not go to the university (but many have at least graduated from the Polytechnics). Is it because the local universities are still under expansion to accommodate more people? If so, I believe most people would have the chance to enter university in the future.

~a novel too deep~
What could have inspired me to write again after a period of three months? There were moments that I almost logged-in to leave my comment on some of the good movies I have watched, like the impressive Marion Cotillard in La Mome. But they were just not as intense as what I am feeling for now. It's all about the timing, when everything started to wrap up in a hole.
I can count the numbers of novels/books I have ever read in my life: "Jurassic Park", halfway, "Diary of a Young Girl", halfway, and "The World is Flat", one-third. It got bored when I read on. And now I am halfway through Murakami's "Norwegian Wood", of which I bet I would pick up again some other time, after I finish reading the remaining half. For one thing, its story suits my taste, and I bet it will do the same for all other sentimental readers. For another thing, Murakami has the magic to bring up every scene and action of the character so vividly by simple sentences and words. Of course, the soul of the novel is the complex feelings of the characters that were felt so real, creating confusion between fiction and the author's autobiographical account. From the book, I rediscover the fact that there were different kinds of people existing; in contrast to the common sense that men would always only think about women and sex, and women would care about make-up and gossip (or perhaps gold medals for the Olympic contestants). Anyone could be so distinct from each other, if we look at a more delicate way. I really admire Murakami, as I don't believe it's possible for him to have gone through so many different kinds of feelings.
So, how did I get my hand on this wonderful novel? On last weekend, I started to feel gastric pain again. It's an alarm. The stuffiness in me came from the flashing in my mind of terms like "magnetic resonances", "protein interaction", "Hence, we conclude that...", etc. I have been sleeping and eating with these journal papers for too long! Actually, I was a bit tensed up in recent months, and I will explain the causes later. I thought to myself, "I really have to lay my eyes on something else". And I am glad I've found it.

I am not happy about many things recently, just like the local culture, always complaining. For examples, I have been missing the double-deck 197 or 179 on a streak (I like to sit on the second deck) and the last service of 198 to go back to our rented apartment in Clementi. Hence, I grumbled about other international students staying on campus, and of course, the Singaporeans who drive to school. I even complained about Singaporeans being too proud of getting a runner-up in table tennis. I disliked some people around me, e.g. a Singaporean in my lab who is admitted in the graduate course in NTU. In my could-be-biased opinion, he definitely lacks the foundation, not to mention smart. But he could talk as if he knew the world. Of course, he has changed. Sadly, I am not blessed with forgiving people. I will always remember how these people look down on me four months ago when I came back to this lab, after failing to get my place in Basel University. Of course, with my boss' reference letter, Stefan was more than happy to take me. However, my application will not be accepted, due to the fact that my honors degree is second class lower.
By the way, I am now a graduate student in NTU. But this status did not come without fight. I did not actually read the emails, but my boss told me that the people in the graduate office were reluctant to offer me the place, and that the Dean of our school (SBS) helped me out by arguing with them in a chain of emails. I am totally disappointed. There must be something so wrong in this world, that truth can be crooked just like the light over a black hole. Are these people paid to look for arguments; did they interview the students? My best guess is that aside from the certificates, things are too complicated for them.
I have been very hardworking for the past year; I took no shortcut and I learned the NMR by myself. I was so tensed up because I took every chance to move towards the top level of the field. There is an evil behind all these: to prove wrong the people who looked down on me. As fair as it may seem, every wish comes with a price.
For long I have lost my imagination to write a single paragraph. My negligence of friends has brought me even further into my own empty space. I don't feel for love at all. I would transform into a mad guy whenever I saw people's happy expression in their photos in Facebook. My soul becomes imbalance, as people have their own good time to pamper their girlfriends, to enjoy friends' outing, to start to build a family. How about mine!? The bank debt will shadow me for years to come, but some people working on easy jobs in the stupid companies are able to enjoy weekly multi-course meals. It's not that I need a girlfriend desperately. It is, of course, possible to sleep with girls if one has money. I won't want to hurt a girl if I don't love her. Call me a bullshit idealist as you like. It's not that I can't live without money. But I hate the idea that people earning more than I do is superior to me.
The most dreadful fact is that I am very lucky to have what I have now, and yet the unrest persists within my evil self. A friend of mine is missing his father, passed away a few months ago; another friend had to deal with some matters between his divorced parents; I couldn't help feeling sad for someone, who is of my age, has contracted cancer; my father runs a business, while some of my friends are saving every cent for their lives. With all blessing, I have stable income from my scholarship, working very well on two projects with great potential, and have my first paper as first author been accepted by JBNMR about two weeks ago. (I sent to JACS in mid-March, and then sent again the requested revision in May. Eventually, it was rejected. What a'nother disappointment.)
People are always hungry for more. I wish I could live like how 庄子 described in《逍遥游》. I wish to marry a girl like my primary school schoolmate Aisa, and live a simple and comfortable life together with my parents in K.K. It was a miracle to bump into her about two years ago, in Sandakan. She is still as beautiful as was 12 years ago. People there are very different. I am touched by their kindness and simple mind, which I'd lost when I left the town many years ago. Unfortunately, I have a mission to continue my research. I aim to find a cure one day, at least a partial one, for Alzheimer's disease (AD) or prion-related encephalopathy. To be honest, I am doing all these things not for myself but for the society, and I do believe I am able to do it. She told me she once came to Singapore to work. She didn't like it and so she went back. Every chosen path comes with a price. I will pay with my life.

Cute Dogs in Movies
Beautiful dogs were cast in two recent Japanese movies, (Ten Promises between Me and My Dog) and 死神の精度 (Accuracy of Death). I haven't watched them yet, but I will get the chance. I suppose both of them are golden retrievers. Perhaps people think they look more cute on-screen. Another movie that features Labrador's life as a guide dog is クイール (Quill).

Puppy Love
These videos show how intelligent and obedient the Labradors are.
They are patient with kids too.
They are natural swimming champions; yet some novice may need to first feel the water.
The young version of a band of brothers attending to Her Majesty.
For Her Majesty, they would brave the big Germans.
Lastly, a video of various breeds of puppies.

To commemorate the loss of our loves
Our beloved rabbits had been stolen:( I wish whoever had taken them will care for them. Let's mourn for Momo, Nano, and Pico.
This video reminds me of the way they munched their favorite pellets.

A historical scar - 5th anniversary
With their lives risked, photojournalists were trying to tell the insiders' stories, and hoping in vain to change their fates.
http://iraq.reuters.com/
The photos are real arts; arts with souls and humanity. At one point of my life, I will join these artistic troops to record the historical marks; be it civil wars in the African nations, tumbling of iceberg, or just hard life of a rural family.

Three little hares - Momo, Nano, Pico
Wei Sheng has started to rear them back in Jan, when they still looked like tiny little rats. The brats have brought fun to our home ever since^^

And they grew at such tremendous speed that a month later... (photos courtesy of Luyin, a.k.a. Momo^^)

And their recent portraits... (Due to low-light, I had to push the f-stop close to 2 even though ISO speed was 800, and hence the background over-blurring. In fact, they were even darker before post-processing with Canon's software.)

(Picojjang, kawaii^^)

Knut und Flocke, sie sind so süß!!!
There are two lil cute baby polar bears in Germany that were suddenly brought to the limelight. And I mean it, they are really cute! Knut is the older boy staying in the Berlin Zoo, while Flocke is a new-born baby girl in Nuremberg. Knut was brought in to be reared by human after being rejected by his mother, while zoo keeper took Flocke away from her mother after witnessing her being tossed around by her mother. The main concern by the animal activists is that these animals may not develop properly in terms of their social behavior under human care. It is unfortunate that no scientific research has ever been done on this issue. Poor lil babies! Nonetheless, may God bless them...and in fact, I would prefer to see video of huge polar bear feeding their cubs on the bleak icy land. SO, save the world! Be a scientist to develop green technologies, take subway rather than drive to work, OR simply be the American or China Communist Party's leader to kick-start carbon-emission curb. The other video is about a baby Sumatran tiger at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. As for the poor tigers facing extinction, STOP hunting for or buying tiger fur you stupid selfish dumbass!

Super Cute!!
As the title suggests, they are exceptionally cute, especially the little snow white Amber in the second clip, though I would prefer a grown-up girlfriend with Alyssa' character.
I have heard from the radio a really sucking song recently, 月儿光光, and I have just found out that it is sung by 5566! 883JiaFM (http://www.883jia.com.sg/) has been my good company for a few months already. The reasons why I like to listen to it rather than Yes933 are because I support great effort from the minors, plus 恺缨 is one of the DJs there! She is a very cute lady, as I found out from her blog on JiaFM website. There are three very cute entries. NO.1: she tried to imitate the sound of tiger cubs for a few hours in the studio after seeing them:

NO.2: she likes the movies "Sleepless in Seattle", "Serendipity", and "You've Got Mail", of which the first two are my fave too. NO.3: "Over msn with a very witty person…
Kay: And in 2008, I shall attempt to grab Lee Hom and marry him. Muahaha!!!
Mr T: Wah la*s. Really is Lust (you), Caution (him)."

Besides, I also got this from her blog, but she made a bit of correction, namely "money is the root of all evils", hence...:

Actually, I really think she looks like the tiger cub when she smiles^^ And we have the same zodiac sign - CANCER! JiaFM is now promoting a trip to HK and Macau in March with 恺缨 and 德江, offered by Dynasty Travel. I really wish to go, but my hapless look appears straight away when I look into my wallet:(
Music is one the beautiful things created by humans. Evidently I enjoy listening to music very much. But the fact that I cannot play any musical instrument becomes a hurdle for me to get more involved and closer to it. Here comes my inspiration to practice singing. Interestingly, I had come up with an idea a few days back. Looking back to 香港劲歌金曲 of the 90s and comparing them with the contemporary music charts, one could easily spot (perhaps by feeling) that they are different, may it be in a subtle way. Therefore, I have this hypothesis that the some attributes of the pop songs have been evolving under some sort of selection pressure. This may seem utterly trivial. But my point here is to be able to characterize or quantify the "attributes" and the "selection pressure", hence able to model the evolution of the "musical taste" of different generations. Besides, we may try to figure out on this basis the attributes that make up songs that top the charts. IF, it's successful, we may then able to synthesize new pop song from the already popular songs.
SO, how am I going to work on it? Seriously, I don't really know, now. But I have reserved a book related to some sort of mathematical and computational description of music, in which music aesthetic was written as a subtopic. Hopefully, I can get something from there. TBC...

Leos Kuss

News excerpted from http://www.timesonline.co.uk/
The king of the jungle showed his romantic side when he reached through the bars of his cage in Cali, Colombia, and clasped Ana Julia Torres in his giant paws to give her a kiss. Ms Torres earned the affection of Jupiter, a 110kg (242lb) African lion, by nursing him back to health after rescuing him from a circus. He is one of about 800 maltreated residents at her Villa Lorena animal shelter in a poor suburb of the city.
Ms Torres, a teacher who began nursing abused animals ten years ago, says that she takes in everything from limbless flamingos to blind monkeys. Jupiter is relatively lucky compared with a mountain lion that had been kept illegally as a pet. Its two front legs were hacked off after it clawed at a family member’s face.
Ms Torres funds the shelter with her salary, bolstered by donations. But she is adamant that it will not open to the public. “We want the animals to live in peace. This is a paradise where they can finally rest.”
